A museum with the world's largest Picasso collection will open in Aix-en-Provence
In 2021, Aix-en-Provence will host a new museum dedicated to Picasso, the "Jacqueline and Pablo Picasso Museum";. It will house the artist's largest collection in the world, with more than 2,000 pieces on display to date, including 1,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics and photographs.
At the origin of this major project, Catherine Hutin-Blay, the Spanish artist's daughter-in-law.
Recently, Catherine Hutin-Blay bought an old convent in Aix-en-Provence in order to share her heritage with as many people as possible. By giving the public access to this collection she inherited, she hopes to pass on the talent and passion of her illustrious stepfather. In mid-December, the municipal council voted to sell the former convent and college of Preachers as well as the ambulatory of the church of the Madeleine to the heiress for 11. 5 million euros. For those who do not know the city, this means that the museum will be in the centre, and therefore easily accessible.
And for this new museum in the heart of old Aix-en-Provence, things are going to be done in style. Indeed, a space of 1,000 square metres will be entirely dedicated to the permanent exhibition, an additional 500 square metres will be reserved for temporary exhibitions and finally, a 200-seat auditorium will host conferences on Picasso and art in general. Makes you want to, doesn't it?
Especially since, according to Janie Cohen, the painter's expert and director of the Fleming Museum of Art at the University of Vermont, "the vast majority of the pieces that will be presented there have never been presented. They represent works that Picasso wished to keep with him throughout his life. "As you will have understood, the arrival of this particularly rich museum is excellent news for Provence and France. In choosing Aix-en-Provence, Catherine Hutin-Blay made the choice of the heart by keeping the works near Jacqueline Roque and Pablo Picasso, both buried at the Château de Vauvenargues, about 15 kilometres away.
